  9. WHEN WE ARRIVED...

  10. BONDI JUNCTION INTERCHANGE Lack of legibility! Hard to navigate No sense of the surrounds! Doesn’t communicate on street level! Wind Tunnel! Lack of signage! No clear views through space! Neglects secondary entrances! Dead end Does not read as a train station! Boring aesthetic!

  11. DUBAI METRO LONG! HERITAGE INSPIRED... GREEN FAST INTEGRATED

  12. DUBAI METRO Longest in the world… 1.2 Million passengers a day… 61% of people will take the Metro to work… Red Line, Prime Location, speeds of 90km/hr… Integrated with other public transport systems… Will generate revenue by 09/09/2009… Feasibility study PS002 in 2004 to assess need… Themed stations - earth, water, fire and air… Like, REALLY long. …Dubai is ranked 117th in the world in terms of area. …Dubai has a population of only 1.9 million people. …39% of people are sure they wont. …Sheikh Zayed Rd has no defined speed limit …Light rail is still in the planning stages. …This is opening day. …This is not the first study conducted. …Random assignment. Prominent. Green... Desert. It’s “Dubai Style”

  13. MOSCOW METRO General facts- First station opened in 1935. Construction began during WWII.- 2nd most used Metro in the world after the Tokyo Metro. - First Metro to employ contactless tickets. - Some stations are up to ~80m deep underground. “Moscow Metro – A Pictorial Guide” - 1980 Moscow Olympics – like a tourist guide. - Presents the Metro lines and photographs of the destination with the station interiors.- Experiential narrative presented.

  14. MOSCOW METRO “Politics and the design of the Moscow Metro” “In the lights and marble columns of the metro the worker sees not only lights, marble and technology, but also the embodiment of his strength and power. In earlier days only the nobility and rich could afford to use marble. The metro is not only a practical device, but it has to be regarded as a victory for the principles of socialist construction... In the capitalist countries, the metros are simple, uniform and grim. Our socialist country can afford to give its people a more comfortable transportation means, even if it is costlier, to raise their self-esteem, sensibilities, and artistic perceptions.” – L. Kaganovich.

  15. LONDON METRO • Improvements: • More pleasant stations • Better access from street to train • Enhanced security • Improved customer information • Problems: • Cooling in summer • Accessibility • Europe's largest metro subway system and is the world's oldest underground system (it was inaugurated in 1863) • It covers 253 miles of track and transports 976 million people yearly • 11 Lines • 2.95 million people daily ridership • 270 stations

  16. Canary Wharf Station London, UK, 1991-1999 Designed by Foster and Partners The entire roof of the station is laid out as a landscaped park; the only visible station elements are the swelling glass canopies that cover its three entrances and draw daylight deep into the station concourse. At 300 meters in length it is as long as Canary Wharf Tower is tall. The robust aesthetic is achieved by a simple palette of hard-wearing materials that create the dramatic atmosphere.

  17. BEIJING SUBWAY History Stage3-Rapid development The only Gate tower that was be kept as a cultural heritage Stage2- 20years for 2 lines The old station entrance of Line1 Stage-1 a clash between conservation and development.

  18. BEIJING SUBWAY Interior Decoration As per the rapid development of Beijing, the entrance of Beijing subway reflects modernity with modern materials And more or less, with traditional elements Entrance appearance Modern and post-modern Negative… Chinese elements in L8-Olypmic branch (blue and white porcelain and Chinese red)

  19. BEIJING SUBWAY Future ----all over the city in 2015

  20. LESSONS AND PROJECTIONS: 2030 Separated at Birth!!?! • From reading the documents we realised that there is a discrepancy between the documents and the desired outcomes (there is a gap between the reality and portrayed media) • So when approaching the Sydney 2030 Metro, we believe that there should be a better balance achieved between the media (written or photographic) and the actual product.
