  3. The Internet Precursor • ARPANET • Began in the 1950s and developed in the 1960s • Under the aegis of the Advanced Research Projects Agency in the U.S. Department of Defense • The Federal Government required reliable communication channels between the nodes of the proposed network

  5. Internet Growth Trends • 1977: 111 hosts on Internet • 1981: 213 hosts • 1983: 562 hosts • 1984: 1,000 hosts • 1986: 5,000 hosts • 1987: 10,000 hosts • 1989: 100,000 hosts • 1992: 1,000,000 hosts • 2001: 150 – 175 million hosts • 2002: over 200 million hosts

  7. Internet Users Growth • Today the Internet continues to grow day by day ,the following graph shows the incredibly fast evolution of the Internet from 1995 till the present time.

  8. Internet Users Growth Trends • By the end of 2005, nearly 70% of homes in the U.S. were connected to the Internet, a number that grows each day. • By 2010, about 80% of the planet will be on the Internet • Nearly 150 countries have some form of connection to the Internet.
