  2. Words to Know! NUTRITION - is the science that studies how body makes use of food. DIET - is everything you eat and drink. NUTRIENTS - are the substances in food.

  3. The Process of Satisfying Hunger • You need energy • You feel hungry • You eat to get rid of hunger • You feel satisfied • You need more energy • The cycle repeats again

  4. Six Nutrients • Carbohydrates- should be the body’s main source of energy. • Protein- used to build body cells and tissue • Fat- source of energy and helps protect nerve endings

  5. Six Nutrients Continued • Minerals- elements found in food that are necessary for good health. • Vitamins- organic compounds that control several body functions. • Water- helps transport the nutrients from food and get rid of waste.

  6. Nutrition • Digestion- the process of breaking down food into a form the body can use. • Fiber-found in certain foods. Helps with digestion • Calorie- the amount of energy from food • Dietary Guidelines- suggestion on how people should eat. • MyPyramind- food guidance system
