Van Tatenhove, MS, CCC-SLP Description: Communication intervention for special education students with complex communication needs (CCN) often focuses on “concrete” vocabulary instead of core vocabulary. These classrooms emphasize real language development in conjunction with meeting curriculum demands and common core state standards. Learner Outcomes Participants will be able to: • Participants will list the 6 steps for creating a core vocabulary classroom. • Participants will identify high frequency, re-useable core vocabulary versus activity-specific, infrequently used extended vocabulary. • Participants will develop strategies for selecting an appropriate AAC system for their students. • Participants will list at least 2 communication partner skills for encouraging use of core vocabulary. • Participants will list at least 3 teaching strategies for systematically providing instruction on core vocabulary.
