  2. Religion Roman religion was a blending of Latin, Greek and Etruscan influences. They adopted a pantheon of deities, six gods and six goddesses who directed the affairs of the world with their superhuman powers. Some had close associations with the Greek Olympians, though many also shared characteristics with early Latin and Etruscan deities.

  3. Many planets in our solar system were named after Roman gods. • Other names have become part of our language in another form. • Vulcan made thunderbolts under Mount Etna, today we call fiery and explosive mountains volcanoes

  5. Juno Queen of the gods and goddess of women (protector of women during childbirth)

  6. Neptune God of the sea and god of earthquakes, caused by banging his trident on the ground.

  7. Minerva Goddess of science and crafts (an old Etruscan goddess).

  8. Ceres Goddess of agriculture.

  9. Vesta Goddess of Fire.

  10. Apollo God of sun and prophecy, adopted directly from the Greeks.

  12. Mercury God of communication, business and trade.

  13. Venus Goddess of love.

  14. Vulcan God of metalworking.

  15. Mars God of war.

  16. In addition to the 12 principal gods, the Romans believed in a number of minor deities and in a spirit world. Spirits were everywhere – in fire, water, stones and trees. Spirits also watched over everyday activities such as planting seeds and baking bread.
