  1. 6.0 Class Discussion Question Define the 1 “Blue” term from page #139 in the BLUE textbook. What are the implications for this type of system?

  2. After today… • Students will be able to define Apartheid • Students will be able to compare and contrast the US policies of the 1960’s with South Africa’s policy of Apartheid. • Students will understand the role Nelson Mandela played in ending Apartheid.

  3. Compare / Contrast • Using the textbook pages 139 to 141 compare (something you should know) the United States struggle with racial equality during the Civil Rights era of the 1960’s with (something you probably don’t know) the Apartheid era in South Africa.

  9. South Africa • 1948: Afrikaner government begins apartheid • Apartheid = • Effort to keep “apart the hides” or skin colors • Segregated whites & blacks

South Africa • Apartheid • Made white supremacy official • Separate, unequal facilities • Pass laws require pass books for blacks to move from one area to another • …like from home to work • Blacks resettled into infertile, resource depleted homelands to ensure segregation & “protect” African culture

  12. Class Note • Until 1994, South Africa was controlled by the white minority. • Whites made up about 16% of the population and yet they controlled all the levers of economic and political power. • The rights of Blacks and “other” minorities were severely restricted (example: Pass Laws).

  16. African Resistance • Of course, Zulu resisted apartheid policies • African resistance organized by group: • African National Congress • Important leaders brought international attention to issue: • Nelson Mandela • Steve Biko (pictured) • Desmond Tutu Nelson Mandela

  17. Nelson Mandela • Comes of age during the Apartheid era of South Africa. • Resists this policy and is imprisoned in 1964. • Was released in 1990 after 27 years in prison. • In 1994 becomes the 1st black President of South Africa
