  1. RPS.LAM The Lake - Kandy At the centre of Kandy is a beautiful tree-lined lake. I always thought of it being a “sacred lake” because of its proximity to the Temple of the Tooth. In fact, it was constructed in 1807 by the last of the Kandyan Kings, Sri Wickrama Rajasinha, as part of the landscaping of his palace. He created the little island as a summer-house for his harem A densely foliated residential district covers the hills on the south side of the lake, while the main town occupies the streets to the west and north. The Hotel Suisse on the southern bank of the lake and we frequently walked all the way round, enjoying the wide variety of wild-life that make it their home. Humming Birds, King Fishers, Parakeetsand Cranes, are just some of the birds that roost in its trees. Lizards, Geckos and Chameleons hunt insects while basking in the sun. Monkeys come down from the hills and big Monitor Lizards swim in the lake. This Slide-Show takes you on our walk round the lake.
