Brown University Choices™ Program (BUCP) • Looks at events in history or current events • Examines options that leaders had (or currently have) • Analyzes • the beliefs and assumptions that support each option • the supporting arguments in favor of each option • the arguments that can be made against your option • Presents an oral argument in favor of a particular option

The French RevolutionBrown University Choices™ Program (BUCP) • Based on the problems France had in 1789, historians generally agree that there were three broad options, or choices, for the leaders of France: • Option 1: Conserve the Power of the King • Option 2: Create a Constitutional Monarchy • Option 3: Liberate France from the Old Regime

The French RevolutionBrown University Choices™ Program (BUCP) • YOU SHOULD ALREADY HAVE: • notes on Ch 23 Sec 1 • Causes of the French Revolution web diagram • Your Enlightenment Thinkers Super Terrific Happy Chart • WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO DO: • Read your option until you understand it • Complete the Enlightenment Thinkers Review Chart (use STHC) • Think about the Enlightenment thinkers like Hobbes, Locke, etc., and connect their beliefs to your option • Begin building your Option Chart

The French RevolutionBrown University Choices™ Program (BUCP) • DECISIONS YOU NEED TO MAKE NOW: • Who is doing what part (of the chart & the oral presentation)? • ORAL PRESENTATION ONE WEEK FROM TODAY, 3/1 • Panel of judges • They evaluate your presentation. • If you're absent, your part of the presentation will be rescheduled • You are on a team. Do your part. • Be prepared to rehearse this Friday, 2/26

  11. Team Leaders • Make sure each of your people completes a web • You are responsible for your team's introductory statement (Block A) • Assign each of your people to a task (i.e. Block, B, C, D, or E)

  12. Helpful Hints • Be honest w/self: do you really understand your option? • Make your arguments more than "one statement deep" • The minimum kills • Do not be afraid to exceed the standard • e.g. could you incorporate Machiavelli into your argument? • Anticipate counter-arguments and questions • i.e. How can our option be criticized? • i.e. What questions are we likely to be asked?
