  3. Britain has one of the highest crime rates in the developed world, and one of the most ineffective police forces. • In 1964 in England and Wales there were 72,000 domestic burglaries; in 2003/04 there were 402,000. • In 1964 there were 3,000 robberies; in 2003/04 there were 101,000.

  4. Crimes against property is still the most committed crimes in Britain. • Over seven in ten of both men and women previously convicted for theft and handling stolen goods in England and Wales were reconvicted within 2 years of their discharge from prison in 1999

Gun Crime • Crime has risen sharply and continually in England since it instituted a complete gun ban in 1997.Since then,crimes involving firearms in England and Wales more than doubled between 1997/98 and 2002/03,to over 10000.In 2002 alone,the English saw a 35% increase in gun crimes. • Most crimes involving firearms are on the increase.For example,Robbery with firearm has increased from 51,004 in 1996 to 88,178 in 2000.

Some Statistics • In the year 2004,the number of criminal cases reached 4,721,800, an increase of 7.4 percent from 2003,said the Ministry of Public Security.Of these cases, 4,067,000, 86.2 percent of the total, were related to financial matters, the ministry said. • This 7.4 percent increase was pushed up by a sharp rise in robberies,which was reported 4 million, up 7.8 percent from 2003.

Another report showing figures related to criminal cases that took place in China during the first six months of 2005 released recently. - The total amount of criminal cases was 2,13 million (a decrease of 1,2% if compared with the same period last year);- Criminal cases cracked by investigators amount to more than 85,000 (no comparative data were given).

  9. The Public Security report also highlighted five important trends in criminal activities: 1. Criminals are targeting richer people or entities;2. Car theft is on the rise: during the first half of the year 48,000 cases were filed nationwide, an increase of 15,5% over the same period in 2004;3. Criminal cases happen more often in public spaces: meaning that the streets are becoming less safe than they used to be;4. The average age of criminals is lowering: more kids are involved in illegal activities;5. New types of criminal activities are emerging: blackmailing, cons, and prostitution via the Web.

  10. Other interesting statistics highlighted in the report: Arson: 4,585 cases (21,3% decrease over the same period last year)Bombing: 543 cases (17,7% decrease)Murders: 11,000 cases (13,6% decrease )Rape: 15,000 cases (5,8% decrease)Assault and battery: 65,000 cases (0,1% decrease)

  11. White-Collar Crime • Official statistics indicate the size of the challenge facing the authorities and how deep corruption has burrowed into the bureaucracy. In the five years from 1997 to 2002, courts handled 118,692 cases of white-collar crime by public officials including embezzlement, bribery and misappropriation of public funds. In that time, the courts handed down 188,482 sentences for offences.
