  2. Overview of Financial Management • Introduction • Keys to Success • Recitations • Class Structure - Syllabus • Text – Financial Management: Core Concepts • Exams – Open Book and Open Notes • Expectations • Attendance • Preparation for Class

  3. Keys to Success • Read Ahead of Lectures • Use syllabus and PowerPoint to help • Bring questions to class on material • Do All Assigned Problems and Quizzes • Homework problems are required and designed to help you master the material – must be completed prior to taking weekly quiz • Test yourself with other questions (Prepping for the Exam Questions have answers in back of book) • Philosophy - this course is basic intuition but with a new language…

  4. Homework and Quizzes • Your homework is assigned each week in MyFinanceLab • There will be a set of problems directly from the book and you get three attempts at each problem. • Once you have completed that week’s homework assignment you can then take the weekly quiz. • The weekly quiz is designed to make sure you understand the chapter material covered that week. • It is a ninety minute (maximum time) quiz. • The quiz must be completed by each Sunday evening.

  5. Recitation Sessions • Every Friday – 50 minutes • Mandatory this Friday 1-8-10 and after exam #1 • This is optional but can help with your point total for the homework assignments. • You will be “rewarded” up to the 10 points for the homework for that week by attending recitation • Example, you only scored 6 points on the homework, attending class will net you 4 points for a total of 10. • Recitation Instructor will go over problems • This will help you prior to taking the quiz to clear up any misconceptions from the material for the week.

  6. Class Structure -- Syllabus • Homework Assignments • Open each week and are due by 11:00 p.m. on Thursday. • Must be completed prior to taking Quiz. • You will receive immediate feedback on your answers, with three chances on each problem. • You can ask for “help” in MyFinanceLab • Weekly Quiz is due by 11:00 p.m. on Sunday • Two Exams during the course. In class, open notes and open book • Final will have an optional time for conflicts.

  7. Examinations • Open Book and Open Notes • Questions will be more difficult • Efficient use of time a must • Notes are your friends…think about how best to use them at lecture time, not when you study for exam • Calculators • Important tool • Know your calculator… • Laptops? • Not in exams • Can use to help solve homework or quiz problems

  8. Textbook • Financial Management: Core Concepts • Approach • Equations, Calculators and Spreadsheets • Personal examples as a segue to business applications • Written for this audience • Special Features for you • Finance Follies – Real World Issues and Examples • Putting Finance to Work – Relations to other disciplines • Choice on Format • Real Book (OSU Bookstore with access code) with access • E-Book (On line version with access to MyFinanceLab) • Secondary Market (not recommended) …must still buy access

  9. Expectations • Attendance • On time for lecture and recitation (professional courtesy and just a good business habit) • Notify me if examination will be missed prior to examine (if at all possible) • Professional Attitude • Toward Instructors and Professor (no early exits) • Toward other students (no cell phones, etc.) • Ethics – Do your own work…this is the time to build your skill set
