  1. William Blake “The Sick Rose”

  2. Biography • Born on the 28th of November 1757 • Died on the 12th of August 1827 (49 years old) • It will be his 253rd birthday on Sunday • An English poet, painter and printmaker • Now considered one of the most seminal figures from the romantic period in both poetry and visual arts. • Was practically unrecognizable during his lifetime.

  3. Inspirations

  4. William Blake - interesting facts * As a little boy, William Blake was inspired by angels and the imagination as he would walk through the streets of the city and proclaimed to see angels and to have discussions with spirits! * At four years old, William Blake swears that God looked through the window at him causing him to scream at the marvel that he saw! * Because of these encounters, the image of the angel would be a constant symbol in William Blake's life! *William Blake's wife, Catherine Boucher, was illiterate and remained illiterate until her death in 1831! *William Blake revealed that he had powers of prophecy. When an engraver was introduced to him by his father, William saw a vision of the man being hanged as he did not like his face. Later on, it was proved that the engraver was indeed false as he was sent to the gallows for excessive debt and forgery. Blake had many talents!

  5. “The Sick Rose” O Rose thou art sick The invisible worm, That flies in the night In the howling storm: Has found out thy bed Of crimson joy And his dark secret love Does thy life destroy

  6. What do I think of the poem? • Crimson – in relation to blood? • Dark Secret Love – one way love, only from the man in this case, the love is unknown perhaps? • Generally a dark and depressing poem, describing shadows and bad weather…”howling winds”.

  7. What do other people think? • “Blake mainly concentrates on the mind, the things that take away peoples freedom aka religion, government etc, so maybe he's referring to the people's life that used to be beautiful until the people had a \"worm\" infecting their life’s. I think he is referring to the government back in the 17th century that had \"dark love\" for power and ate away all the joy out of peoples lives..”

  8. “the invisible worm” – a symbolic meaning for something that tear a person down, from the inside? • The “rose” is quite obviously a woman, who is “ill” or in my opinion has some kind of mental illness or depression rather than a physical illness. • “Crimson joy” is used to describe pure happiness so before the worm found her she was happy?
