Programme • 3 year full-time programme; • Qualification to work in a variety of social care settings including residential child care, services for the intellectually disabled, services for the homeless • Desirable personal characteristics: altruism, maturity, sensitivity, communication skills • School leavers: 400 CAO points in 2013. • Basic entry requirements: Leaving certificate in 6 subjects at least two of which must be at grade C3 or higher on higher-level papers. Subjects must include Irish or English and Mathematics.

  3. Programme Elements Theoretical: Psychology, Sociology, Social policy and Legal Issues, Intellectual disabilities; Practice: Professional Practice, Art, Drama, Health, Counselling skills, group work, Supervised Practice Placement Research: critical review of research and writing of minor dissertation on topic of student’s choice.

  4. Supervised Practice Placement • Supervised placement in 3 settings over the 3 years of programme; • Placement selected and supervised by college tutors; • Clear guidelines for staff and students.

  5. Student Support • Support of class tutor; • Tutorials on individual and group basis; • Small class sizes; • Regular contact between college and placement. • DIT Student Support Services.

  6. Employment Prospects • Statutory and voluntary agencies • Salary scales, approx: • Social care worker €33,000 - €39,875

  7. Progression Routes • Further study – recognised hons degree for entry to Masters / Pg Dip level
