  1. Catch the Wind of the Spirit Evangelism: The Powerful Woo Current

  2. THE POWERFUL WOO CURRENT:evangelism

  3. How much woo?Lavish love / clear message versus

  4. Richard C. Halverson, chaplain of the United States Senate for more than a decade “Evangelism is not salesmanship. It is not urging people, pressing them, coercing them, overwhelming them, or subduing them. Evangelism is telling a message. Evangelism is reporting good news.” • The Great Commission Connection. Raymond F. Culpepper, ed. “Telling It Like It Is: Personal Evangelism and the Great Commission” by Leonard C. Albert (Cleveland, TN: Pathway Press, 2011) 521.

  5. Jesus • Made people think • Asked a lot of questions • Told tons of stories

  6. Acts 1:8 • 8  “but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

  7. Luke 24:49 • “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay (wait, tarry) in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” (NIV)

  8. Paul, Silas and Timothy, in their letter to the Thessalonians, said that it was clear the church people there were chosen by God because their sharing of the gospel came “not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit, and with deep conviction.” (I Thess. 1:5).

  9. We all need to wait until we receive power from on high… • …..and then say exactly what the Father wants us to say, when He wants us to say it! We need to hear from the Lord before we speak to people about Him. Prayer is imperative!

  10. THE POWERFUL WOO CURRENT: We will constantly have people coming to Christ because the church is always sharing, loving, reaching out, and wooing others to Him. Those working in this current have been empowered by God through the baptism in the Holy Spirit and His constant presence with them. They say exactly what He wants them to say so that souls can be reached with the good news.

  11. LOCAL EVANGELISTS ABOUND • Evangelists are attractional and act as a doorway for others to come into the church. Four Facets: • The converser • The convincer • The investor • The inviter Hirsch, Alan and Tim Catchim. The Permanent Revolution): Apostolic Me Imagination and Practice for the 21st Century Church. (San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2012)

  12. The involvement of the trinity in evangelism

  13. The Holy Spirit is involved…. • He “….convicts the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment.” • John 6:8-9

  14. D.L. Moody once said, “There is not a better evangelist in the world than the Holy Spirit.”

  15. Jesus also cared about evangelism • Jesus likewise came to seek and to save the lost. He says in John 4: 35 that we should not say, “Four months more and then the harvest. Open your eyes,” He states, and “look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.”

  16. Jesus said, “GO into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” (John 16:15) • He just kept walking……

  17. God wants to lift up Jesus and see people be drawn to him • The Scottish evangelist Robert Morrison, who was the first Christian Protestant missionary in China, was asked, “Now Mr. Morrison, do you really expect that you will make an impression on the idolatry of the Chinese Empire?” • He answered, “No, sir, but I expect God will.” • American Sunday-School Union. (New York: Bible House, nd) 84 Missionary Anecdotes. Series First. Making of America Digital Library. http://quod.lib.umich.edu/m/moa/ajg7538.0001.001/96?page=root;sid=95e3f6e828e116b80d4cccd93c806bc1;size=100;view=image (Accessed 9/19/2014)

  18. God will give us the words to say and then HE will do the work! Billy Graham once said, “I have had the privilege of preaching the gospel on every continent in most of the countries of the world. And I have found that when I present the simple message of the gospel of Jesus Christ, with authority and simplicity and quoting from the very word of God---he takes the message and drives it supernaturally into the human heart…. It is a supernatural message, a supernatural authority, a supernatural power, the power of the Holy Spirit.” • Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. “The Story of How God Called Billy Graham” http://www.billygraham.org.uk/Groups/178966/Billy_Graham_Evangelistic/Who_We_Are/About_Us/Billy_Graham_History/Billy_Graham_History.aspx (Accessed 9/19/2014)

  19. What is the general state of the church today in regards to evangelism?

  20. The Church in America • Eighty percent of the churches in America are not growing (defined as just 5% growth per year). An average of eight churches in the U.S. and Canada close every day. More than half of all churches in America added not one new member as measured in 2010-2012. Nearly 3,ooo,ooo more previous churchgoers enter the ranks of the "religiously unaffiliated” every single year. • Mychurchgrowth.com/church%20growth/agr.php (Accessed 6/4/2015) • Steve McSwain. The Blog. “Why Nobody Wants to Go to Church Anymore.” 10/14/2013 (Accessed 6/6/2015) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/steve-mcswain/why-nobody-wants-to-go-to_b_4086016.html

  21. Pew Charitable Trust states, “The number of Christians around the world has nearly quadrupled in 100 years, from about 600 million in 1910 to more than 2 billion in 2010. But the world’s overall population also has risen from an estimated 1.8 billion in 1910 to 6.9 billion in 2010.” Christians today make up about 32% of the world’s population as opposed to 35% in 1910. • Pew Charitable Trust. www.pewforum.org/2011/12/19/globalchristianity-exec.1 (Accessed 6/5/2015)

  22. Before age 13…. • …..most children come to Christ through their parents (50%) or a relative or friend (20%). The rest make commitments through a minister’s personal prompting (7%), a special event (12%), and only 1% through media. • Barna Group. “Evangelism Is Most Effective Among Kids.” https://www.barna.org/barna-update/article/5-barna-update/196-evangelism-is-most-effective-among-kids#.U5IyxILL_Og (Accessed 6/12/2014)

  23. The statistics for how adults come to Christ are somewhat different from that of children. • The highest percentage become Christians through a friend (19%), followed by mass media experiences and a live event (each 14%), or a relative (13%). Ministers lead 10% of the adult converts to Christ and parents of adults influence 8% of them. • Ibid.

  24. A Barna study showed…. …..that 43% of all Americans who accept Jesus Christ as their Savior do so before age 13, and that 64% of born again Christians make their decision before they are 18. Only 13% make a commitment to Christ when they are between 18-21 years old, and 23% find Christ after their 21st birthday.

  25. If you could change one thing about evangelism in the u.s. right now, what would it be?
