  5. Factorization of 12 Vocabulary You can use factors to write a number in different ways. Notice that these factors are all prime. 1 • 12 2 • 6 3 • 4 3 • 2 • 2 The prime factorization of a number is the number written as the product of its prime factors.

  6. Helpful Hint You can use exponents to write prime factorizations. Remember that an exponent tells you how many times the base is a factor.

  7. Example 3: Writing Prime Factorizations Write the prime factorization of 24. Method 1: Use a factor tree.

  11. Vocabulary Factors shared by two or more whole numbers are called common factors. The largest of the common factors is called the greatest common factor, or GCF. Factors of 24: Factors of 36: Common factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 The greatest common factor (GCF) of 24 and 36 is 12. Example 1 shows three different methods for finding the GCF.
