Observations • CERT truck was monitored very closely during the parade • Coverage provided by WA1PLR-5 in the Walpole Police Building and AB1PH-14 RF only monitoring on Walpole Field • Even with a primitive jury rigged installation • Pedestrian traffic in field was also monitored well, again by WA1PLE-5 • APRS appears ready for field deployment

  5. Configuration • WA1PLE-5 is 2meter rig with APRSISCE software with internet access • AB1PH-14 was an FT-817ND with TNC-X, and Netbook running APRSISCE in RF only mode (no internet access) • Mobile/portable units were Kenwood TH-D72A integrated APRS handhelds

  6. Conclusions • With adequate station coverage (either base station or RF only field units), APRS can effectively track field assets • APRS can also in this configuration can also support text messaging between stations: tests from field RF only stations to handhelds and between handhelds was successfully performed • It is probably useful to have a powerful mobile station supporting fill-in digipeater functionality to support foot based field units as they become dispersed in areas with difficult coverage • Foot field units should have integrated APRS/communications handheld units such as the Kenwood TH-D72A • APRS appears ready for tactical usage and needs to be considered for support of future deployments
