  1. GLAST-LAT Calibration UnitFlight Hardware Handling Plan Review Luca Latronico luca.latronico@pi.infn.it April 14 2006

  2. Reference documentation • Review LAT-TD-8131 LAT CU Flight Hardware Handling Plan • General documents • LAT-TD-02152 Beam Test Rationale • The CU beam test is part of the LAT Calibration Strategy • Requirements flow-down • LAT-MD-00039 Performance Assurance Implementation Plan • LAT-MD-00228 CAL, TKR, Trigger & Data Flow Contamination Control Plan • TKR and CAL subsystems specific documents • LAT-PS-03290 TKR Module Test Procedure • LAT-PS-03287 CAL Module Test Procedure • LAT-PS-04525 TKR Tower PHT Procedure

  3. Calibration Unit Description

  4. Facilities and working conditions • Quality assurance and traceability • core team is the same that assembled, tested and delivered 16+1 flight TKR modules • new personnel training in ESD, clean room operations, relevant procedure for flight hardware handling, test, operation in CERN test areas • CU flow-chart + specific operations AIDS and travelers • Test records • Mate-demate log for flight connectors • NCR management system from TKR construction experience • INFN-Pisa – flight hardware direct handling and test • standard class 100K clean room regulations for cleanliness and environmental control (T, rH) • ESD control, mate-demate as for all LAT flight hardware • CERN – No flight hardware directly exposed • T9/PS test area 7/27-8/22-2006, H4/SPS test area 9/4-9/18-2006 • Environmental (T, rH) and contamination control by placing CU inside Inner Shipping Container (cooling + N2 flux) • Working conditions control by means of data loggers and particle counters

  5. Plan of operations at INFN-Pisa • Pre-integration activities on single flight modules • shipping, receiving, functional incoming test, calibrations as per released subsystems procedures • Storage of modules in INFN clean room • additional bag and purge for CAL modules • CU Integration • TKR inserted from top as per LAT I&T TKR integration • CAL inserted from bottom with new MGSE • compared to LAT I&T MGSE has same degrees of freedom, alignment accuracy, mechanical (load) and electrical (grid contact) check during operation • MGSE proof test planned and documented • CU testing • Single and multiple tower functional test and data taking using existing scripts • Test DAQ integration with ancillary detectors • CU Integration with Inner Shipping Container (ISC) • Test operational conditions • Complete hardware integration with ACD tiles • Full system test • Data logger for T, rH, shock record with external DC power

  6. CAL Integration movie click to see movie See http://glast.pi.infn.it/glastdocs/cernbeamtest/workshop/slides/CU_Integration.ppt for details LAT-PS-8132CU Integration procedure - review planned for end of april N.Saggini – F.Bellardi

  7. Inner Shipping Container assembly • Most elx outside ISC • minimize heating • maximize flexibility and control Support plate supports TKR CAL TEM-TPS Data logger Particle counter cables exit through a polyethylene sleeve collar(no hermetic but protected from dust) Hollow pipe cover

  8. Inner Shipping Container during operation GASU PS VME Free board AL top shield (4mm thick) AL top shield (2mm thick) AL lateral shield (4mm thick) AL lateral shield (2mm thick) Top cooling pipe ACD tiles N2 valve Shield frame beam Support plate Interface plate • Approx mass: 750kg • ACD tiles installed directly over ISC • Environmental test : relative humidity and particle contamination tracking with the ISC in a standard room with N2 flux • Proof Test with mass simulators • See http://glast.pi.infn.it/glastdocs/cernbeamtest/workshop/slides/CU_ISC.ppt for details • LAT-PS-8133CU Inner Shipping Container Design and Proof Test - review planned for end of april

  9. Plan of operations at CERN • CU Shipment (INFN-CERN-INFN) • CU/ISC assembly inside Outer Shipping Container (OSC) • OSC designed to provide complete sealing from outside • dessicant bags added + N2 fill before transportation • Breather valves for pressure changes compensation • N2 flux as a backup or for longer storage outside controlled areas • Operations at CERN • CU/ISC + XY scanning table in test areas exposed to particle beams • No intervention on hardware except control of TEM-GASU connections through cables-pass through • Only trained personnel for operations (data taking, table rotation, beam operation) • Environmental data tracking by data loggers and I&T housekeeping • CU/ISC or CU/ISC/OSC between test runs • Hardware periodic surveillance (no 24/7 attendance) • N2 flux monitor and renewal

  10. Outer Shipping Container • Storage-Transportation • Integration with CU-ISC Pressure gauge 2 Breather valves X CU-ISC LAT coordinate ref. system 1m Z Y N2 inlet ISC Interface Plate 1.85 m Wire Ropes Isolators 2.3 m O-ring Groove + Steel lifting fixture for crane handling (not shown) OSC-ISC Interface Plate • Overall 1.5 ton for transporation, storage, T, h, contamination control outside CR • see http://glast.pi.infn.it/glastdocs/cernbeamtest/workshop/slides/CU_OSC.ppt for details • LAT-PS-8134 CU Outer Shipping Container Design and Proof Test - review planned for end of april

  11. Final and emergency operations • Flight hardware modules to ISOC • CU de-integration at INFN after beam test completion • all operation are reversible • Single module packaged and shipped to ISOC as per subsystems procedures • Emergency Plan to de-integrate and ship FHW back to USA in case LAT spares are needed • expected duration while at INFN: 4 days + 3 for customs + shipment • If at CERN: a stop should be considered only between PS and SPS data taking – a stop during any of the two data taking time would flaw the whole effort and would be very expensive for all the institutions involved; time estimate would be: • 2 days to remove ISC from area, 1 day for Swiss customs, 2 days for transportation to INFN, 4 days at INFN + 3 days for customs + shipment
