  1. Joshua Davis Derek Knierim Intro to Digital 2/11/11

  2. About • Born June 13, 1971 • Designer • Studio Location • Travel • “Flash To the Core”

  3. Process • Draw “icons” in Illustrator (4 days) • Text, organic elements, forms taken from nature • Write program (4 days, depending) • “Wait” (few weeks-a month) • Time frame for “waiting for that perfect composition, that beautiful accident”

  4. Exploring new techniques through programming • Using media that is unfamiliar or experimental or even (seemingly) useless • Keeps things interesting for all parties concerned • Failing a lot

  5. Loss of control… • Pollock as an idea/gesture • Paint leaving the brush • Creating Davis’ gesture • Medium has it’s own attitudes, moods, compositions etc. • Letting go of the reigns and giving the elements “coke”

  6. “Art will always mutate into something else” • Living organisms/icons • Program movement on nature (flowing water , wind, insect movements) • Millions of iterations • Millions of compositions

  7. Saturated surroundings • Know our surroundings too well • Minute design elements • Japan • “Hard to see your environment, when you are in your environment… amen!”

  8. Work Like Hell • Keeping motivated through themes • Exploring “broken” or unfamiliar media (programs) • Loss of control • Leaving your “familiar environment for a new unfamiliar one” • Who notices • There are those that talk about working and those who work
