  1. Dictogloss Writing texts using memory and creativity

  2. Dictogloss • Learners interact and cooperate reconstructing a text • They try out new language and reactivate language they already know – a balance of memory and creativity

  3. Stage 1 Preparation for task Activating schemata and pre-teaching vocabulary. Makes the listening more effective as interest is heightened and learners are able to anticipate what they will hear.

  4. Stage 2 Dictation of the text Learners listen to a short text. The text is repeated and learners write down the key words. Key words should only relate to the content or information in the text as these will trigger the memory during the reconstruction stage.

  5. Stage 3 Reconstruction of the text Learners work in small groups to reconstruct the text using the key words. Each group appoints a ‘scribe’ who writes down the text as it emerges through their discussions.

  6. Stage 4 Analysis This stage not only corrects but provides options for alternative language forms. Learners compare and discuss language options with other groups.

  7. Advantages • Helps learners to write a cohesive text. • Explores their knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation. • Integrates skills. • Raises awareness of language – learners notice language.

  8. Advantages • Encourages learner autonomy – error correction, proof reading & editing skills. • Integrates testing and teaching of language. • Presents grammar in context. • Helps learners who require support with writing tasks.

  9. Advantages • It has the experiential factor – learners learn best by actively participating in tasks designed to use specific language.

  10. Disadvantages • Not as effective for lower level learners. • Subject matter of the text may not interest all learners. • Dominant learners may prevent others from participating fully (especially during the reconstruction stage).

  11. Disadvantages • Learners may be reluctant to discuss/correct the text with other groups. • Learners unfamiliar with the teaching approach may want to write down every word dictated.

  12. Follow on The text can be used to introduce the topic, language and vocabulary needed for learners to produce their own piece of writing.
