  1. Motion in One Dimension Linear Motion With Constant Acceleration

  2. Constant Acceleration • At this point, we will assume that the objects we will be encountering will have constant acceleration… • In graphing, we saw objects that did not necessarily have constant velocity and/or acceleration (remember the velocity vs. time graphs).

  3. We will be learning two new formulas today to help us solve for displacement in our kinematic equations • Kinematics : “the branch of physics that deals with pure motion, without reference to the masses or forces involved in it.”

  4. The first equation allows us to solve for displacement… This equation uses initial velocity, time and acceleration: • x = vit + ½at2

  5. The second equation allows us to use put the variables vf, vi, a & x together: vf2=vi2 + 2ax

  6. This is very important: Once you know your 3 kinematic equations: • a = vf – vi t • x = vit + ½at2 • vf2=vi2 + 2ax

  7. You only need to know three given variables to solve for both of the other two unknown variables

  8. Emmanuel rides his scooter at 1.8 m/s when it begins to accelerate uniformly at a constant rate. After traveling 20s, his velocity is 2.4 m/s. What is Emmanuel’s acceleration? How far has he traveled?

  9. Vanessa pushes a shopping cart with an initial velocity of 2.0 m/s and experiences a constant acceleration of 3.0 m/s2. What is the cart’s displacement after the first 4.0 s of its motion? What is her final velocity?

  10. Dicarlo rides his racehorse and accelerates uniformly at 7.56 m/s2, reaching its max speed after running 19.0 m. If the horse starts at rest, what is its final speed? How long did it take?

  11. On a roller coaster, Sergio accelerates to a speed of 14 m/s. He accelerates at .7m/s2. If he travels a distance of 100m, what was his initial velocity? How long did it take?

  12. You are driving to school when you realize you are late! You accelerate your car at 3 m/s2 for 11s. If you drive 500m, what was your initial velocity? What was your final velocity?
