Chemical Technologies for Waste Treatment at NPPs: Recycling of Liquid Radioactive Wastes and Increasing Technological E

This project proposal focuses on the recycling of liquid radioactive wastes and increasing the service life of technological equipment at nuclear power plants. The aim is to develop a new direction that uses ion exchange materials for the selective removal of radioactive metals, eliminating the need for gas combustion energy and reducing the use of heat transfer agents. Additionally, the proposal includes a method for cleaning contaminated metal surfaces using porous oxide film formation and electric impulse methods. The project aims to find consortium partners and EU participants for Horizon 2020 funding.

  3. Recycling of liquid radioactive wastes (LRW) For prolonged storage of LRW main fraction of radioactivity is accounted for the following radionuclides: cesium-134,137 (50-90%), strontium-90, cobalt-60, manganese-54, ruthenium-106, cerium-144 and others. A new direction is offered, which uses ion exchange materials for the selective removal of radioactive metals. Such processes, lines and ion exchange materials can be used for the removal of long-lived radioactive isotopes of cesium, cobalt, strontium, etc. of liquid radioactive waste, which usually occur as by-products of the work of cooling systems of nuclear reactors in nuclear power plants. One of the key points of the proposed technology is the elimination of the gas combustion energy use, as well as heat transfer agents in the form of steam for evaporation or distillation. The second point is replacement of the organic ion-exchange resins, which are not subject to recovery due to ionizing radiation, with radiation-resistant, highly selective to radionuclides inorganic ion-exchange materials. Such materials also solve the problem of distillation and evaporation due to the fact that they only absorb the ions to be removed. Project Idea

  4. Increasing of technological equipment service life In the NPP conditions metal surfaces are contaminated mainly by activated corrosion products of construction materials (e.g. 54Мn, 55Fe, 60Со,90Sr, 137Cs, 238Рu, 239Рu, 240Рu, 241Аm, 242Аm, 237Np etc. The essence of suggested technology: the method of cleaning of contaminated metal surfaces includes the step of forming of the porous oxide film on the surface that needs to be cleaned after the physical and chemical processing methods and further treatments of products and constructions by electric impulse methods and/or ultrasound. Project Idea Features of technology allows to use it in the event of accidents and emergencies
