Introduction to China • China was ruled by many different dynasties throughout its early history.What is a dynasty?The Shang was the first recorded dynasty and the Song was the last dynasty. • China was an Isolationist country throughout it’s earliest history. The Chinese felt that they had the only civilized culture in the world. What do you think Isolationism is?

Introduction to China • The Chinese began to trade with Great Britain after being pressured to do so. • What do you think the British wanted to do? • To gain control in China,The British began to bring opium (an addictive drug) to China. • This caused tension, and two wars were fought over this drug.

What are some characteristics of a Communist country? • One of the most controversial leaders of Communist China was Mao Zedong. Mao believed in Marxism which believes in a classless society in which all people are equal. We will talk in more detail about Mao Zedong in the days to come…..

Introduction to China One Child Policy • China has tried to find ways to help the over-population. • 1979– Came up with the one-child policy • Couples that have only one child receive incentives from the government. • Couples with more than one child pay fines. • Policy has caused a high adoption rate in China.

  9. Did You Know?..... • The Terra-Cotta Soldiers were built for the Emperor Shi Huangdi to guard his tombs. They have unearthed thousands of the clay soldiers. • The Great Wall of China was built to keep out invaders during Shi Huangdi’s reign. This wall is 4,000 miles long and can be seen from space.
