  1. The Effectiveness of the Abstinence, Be faithful and Condoms (ABC) method as a means of HIV/AIDS Prevention By Mike J. Chibita, Chair ACET (U) Ltd, Board

  2. Background • “Who are virgins?” asks an 8-year old • Exposure – to media, peers, etc.; and the thirst for knowledge of children and youth • The challenge to parents – being there, trying to understand the basis of these questions, clarifying things (that may not be very clear to the parents!), getting informed and equipped ACET International Conference

  3. WHAT IS ABC? • Abstinence - simply means that sexual activity is completely cut out of the menu • Being faithful – sexual faithfulness for married or co-habiting couples • Condoms - for couples where one spouse is positive and the other negative; and for someone not married and cannot abstain from sex ACET International Conference

  4. CONCLUSION • ABC, in that order has worked quite well for this country that we do not need to reorganize the order of the model • Abstinence therefore has to be pushed as the default position • Young people, especially, need to be reminded that they have the right and the will to say no to sex before marriage • There is no need to have a running battle within the ABC model between Abstinence and Condoms. The pecking order should be left as simple as ABC! ACET International Conference
