  4. Essential Question How are geometric shapes identified?

  5. There are many different geometric shapes.

  6. circle circle – a shape that is round.

  7. square square- a rectangle whose four sides are of equal length.

  8. triangle triangle- a three-sided polygon

  9. rectangle rectangle- a shape with four sides. Each side of the shape is the same length as the side opposite it.

  10. cone cone – a shape whose base is a circle and whose sides taper up to a point.

  11. cylinder cylinder– a solid bound by a cylindrical surface and two parallel bases

  12. hexagon hexagon- a shape with six sides.

  13. octagon octagon – a figure having eight sides and eight angles.

  14. pentagon pentagon- a shape with five sides with five angles inside of it.

  15. equilateral triangle equilateral triangle- a triangle with equal sides and equal angles.

  16. isosceles triangle isosceles triangle- a triangle which has two sides exactly the same length.

  17. scalene triangle scalene triangle- a triangle with no equal sides or angles.

  18. sphere sphere– a solid figure that has the shape of a ball.

  19. cube cube - a three-dimensional shape with six square or rectangular sides.
