Character Development

Short Stories Unit

Character Development: Flat

  • Flat: Embody or represent a single characteristic, trait, or idea. They are not developed. Sometimes referred to as stereotyped or stock characters.

  • Example: Gollum

Character Development: Round

  • Complex, multi-dimensional, and developed, embodying a number of qualities and traits. Usually a main character in the books you have read.

Character Development: Static

  • The character does not change. Supporting characters. Sidekicks. Why not make a character change? To help the non-static character stand out and illuminate how they have changed.

Character Development: Dynamic

  • The character changes in their insight, understanding, or values. Changes in circumstance, even physical circumstance, do not apply unless they result in some change within the character's self.
