Journal Format

1. Journal Format • Start by putting your name and the journal # in the upper left hand corner. Also include what time the class meets (mornings/afternoons) No MLA format on journals. • Retype the question in bold and single space it, so as to remind yourself what you’re answering. • Skip down a line and begin your answer.

2. Answering the Question • Always begin with your topic claim and make sure it directly answers the question. Right: Success means financial success and doom for my enemies! Wrong: I have often wondered where I will be when I’m 30 or 40 years old. Will I be in the gutter drinking a 40 or will I sit in a corner office wondering how to spend all my money. (Doesn’t answer the question.)

3. Evidence to Prove Your Point • Following the topic sentence, you should provide evidence in the form of quotes, paraphrases, or ideas. • One method to do this is to introduce an idea followed by specific evidence, i.e., a chunk. Example: (idea) As Norman Vincent Peale notes in his video, we are offered choices of success or failure in our lives. (evidence) I learned this the hard way last year when I had the chance to open a new hair salon with a friend of mine, but because I was nervous about borrowing money during the recession, I passed the opportunity. My friend is now making a good income, which has been frustrating to me.

4. Multiple Chunks • The topic sentence might be followed by about three chunks, with the chunks organized in emphatic order, from least important to most important. Or they might be arranged chronologically.

5. Common Errors • Drop “I feel,” “I think,” “I believe.” Instead just state your thought. • Avoid generalizing. Provide specific evidence to support your claims. Also, it’s better if you can quote from the video or the reading to support your ideas.
