  5. To Clarify, • If you teach a yearlong course you have the option of completing a yearlong SLO OR a SLO for semester 1 or 2 • If you teach a semester long course you complete ONE SLO (either 1st or 2nd semester). NOT 2 SLOs • ONE SLO for everyone! Highly Effective Teachers do NO SLOs

Out with the old - In with the new • All the SLO documents have changed • Throw out ALL of last year’s SLO templates, samples, guides etc. All of it! ----Out of your binder and off of your computer! • Read your new EES manual Pages 32-39 • New PDE3 Instructions for SLO Upload will be given next week • You can find all the new stuff on mauihigh.org under the Teachers button and EES and SLOs • Or log on to the DOE Intranet, Six Strategies, EES

  7. Big idea has been omitted • Identification of DoK level added • Expected Targets are on a common Excel record sheet • Assessment plan is added SLO Updates: Template Handout Template

  8. SLO 4 Key Components • Learning Goal (This Presentation) • A description of what students will be able to understand, know, and do at the end of the interval of instruction • Assessments • Measurement of students' understanding of the learning goal (9/17/14 Training) • Expected Targets • The expected student outcome by the end of the instructional term • Instructional Strategies • The strategies that will address student needs and that have been shown to be effective (9/24/14 Training)

  9. SLO SAMPLE at a Glance ACTIVITY: Take 3 minutes to look through the entire Gr. 10 Social Studies SLO Sample Handout Hist Sample

  10. Focus on Learning Goal of the SAMPLE ACTIVITY: As a group, analyze the learning goal and decide, What does the learning goal component include? Handout Hist Sample

  11. Whole Group Sharing What are the 4 main sections of the Learning Goal Component?

  12. Sit back and Enjoy! SLOs From a Teacher's Perspective • http://vimeo.com/106260710

  13. Your Learning Goal Think about the class you will write your SLO for: What are the most important knowledge/skills I want my students to know and be able to do? Jot down some notes!

  14. Planning Document • What is the learning goal statement? • Learning goal statement: what students will be able to know, understand and do at the end of the interval of instruction (teaching time-frame) that reflects the major learning of the course. • Does the learning goal reflect all major aspects of the identified standards? (Endurance) • Does the goal cross disciplines? (Leverage) • Does the goal impact future grade levels and the demands of college and career readiness? (Readiness) • Is the learning goal appropriate for the interval of instruction? • Endurance, Leverage & Readiness are new key terms the DOE wants you to know. Yay! P.7 Plan Doc

  15. Planning Document P.7 Plan Doc • Include all content standards associated with this learning goal • Is there an identified standard/s that reflects major learning of the content? • Major learning is standards that reflect readiness (impact future grade-levels), leverage (cross-disciplines), and endurance (real-world application). • INCLUDE Common Core Standards. • ALL subjects can use either Literacy or Math Standards.

  16. One way to write your Learning Goal: Review your Standards and Combine them. • 2.NBT.1: Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones; • 2.NBT.3: Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. • 2.NBT.4: Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. The Learning Goal Statement: Students will be able to read and write numbers using base-ten numerals and apply their understanding of place value by representing numbers pictorially (using symbols for base-ten block manipulatives), writing numbers in expanded form, locating a number on a number line, and comparing numbers.

  17. Planning Document P.8 Plan Doc • Explain the rationale for the learning goal. • How does the goal demonstrate major learning of the course? • Is the goal an area of need • (i.e. academic plan, data-driven priority area)? • Identify Depth of Knowledge level • (DoK level 3 or 4). • Show Hess Video

  18. Depth of KnowledgeVideo

  19. P.9 Plan Doc Know the Depth of Knowledge Levels Use DoK Flipchart as an additional reference Grades 3 to 12 = DoK level 3 or 4

  20. DoK Handy-Dandy Flip Chart Level 3 • Page 14/15: Products, Activities, Questions • Page 16: ELA and Social Studies • Page 17: Math and Science Level 4 • Page 18/19: Products, Activities, Questions • Page 20: ELA and Social Studies • Page 21: Math and Science
