The law says…. • We are required by law to train you and update you on mandatory topics. • We want to streamline training time and keep the requirements reasonable for your staff time. • But we have to keep students safe, and keep you safe. • You will need to sign in as a record of your attendance today.

  4. Annual update: Affirmative action • The Sumner School District complies with all applicable federal and state rules and regulations and does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, families with children, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, age, honorably discharged veteran or military status, or the presence of any sensory, mental, or physical disability or the use of a trained dog guide or service animal by a person with a disability. • This is our intent and our obligation, and we hope that any violations are reported to your supervisor or to HR—two ways to report.

Annual update: Child Abuse reporting per RCW 26.44.030 • (1)(a) When any … professional school personnel, registered or licensed nurse, … psychologist, … employee of the department of early learning, licensed or certified child care providers or their employees …has reasonable cause to believe that a child has suffered abuse or neglect, he or she shall report such incident, or cause a report to be made, to the proper law enforcement agency or to the department as provided in RCW 26.44.040.(b) When any person, in his or her official supervisory capacity with a nonprofit or for-profit organization, has reasonable cause to believe that a child has suffered abuse or neglect caused by a person over whom he or she regularly exercises supervisory authority, he or she shall report such incident, or cause a report to be made, to the proper law enforcement agency, provided that the person alleged to have caused the abuse or neglect is employed by, contracted by, or volunteers with the organization and coaches, trains, educates, or counsels a child or children or regularly has unsupervised access to a child or children as part of the employment, contract, or voluntary service. • How to report in this location ____________________

  10. Annual update: BloodBorne Pathogens/HIV • Remember to always use the Universal Precautions. • If you have to help an injured student or patron, wear gloves. If possible, ask the person to apply direct pressure on his/her wound with a clean cloth. • Call the Custodian (who is specially trained) to clean up blood or other bodily fluids and bio hazardous waste. • Always wash your hands when handling bodily fluids and after using the bathroom. • Gloves in this building are located __________.

  11. If you are exposed to body fluids at work: • If you have had unprotected exposure while on the job, (a bite, a needle stick…) please get a Job Injury Packet form from the office as soon as possible. You will be offered the opportunity to obtain a Hepatitis B vaccine at District expense. • Questions? Annual update: Employee Information Booklet • The Employee Information Booklet is updated each year with any policy or procedure changes for which you are responsible. • You will receive a link to the Employee Information Booklet for the 2014-15 school year. • Once you have reviewed it, you will confirm electronically that you have reviewed the booklet. • Your confirmation will be tracked automatically. • You have until October 1 to review the booklet.

  14. If your children speak to you in Latin or any other language which they should not know, or if they speak to you using a voice other than their own, shoot them immediately. It will save you a lot of grief in the long run.  NOTE: It will probably take several rounds to kill them, so be prepared.

  15. Annual Update: Supervision of Students • For ALL employees: Schools have a duty to protect students from unreasonable risk of harm. • Safety of students is our primary responsibility, even more important than student learning. • We must protect students from dangers that are known or should have been known. • Dangers come from: • Activity • Environment • Other Students • Other Adults.

  16. Supervision of Students continued • Reminder: Certs’ certification requires them per WAC 181-87-060 to follow generally recognized professional standards in treatment and supervision of students. Certs can lose their certification over this. • Supervision must occur to keep negative things from happening to students. Staff must remain attentive and present in the area. Never leave a disruptive or dangerous situation, and never ask students to supervise other students. • Off Campus supervision requires special procedures and rules. Ask your administrator BEFORE you act.

  17. When you have the benefit of a group of people, NEVER pair off and go it alone.

  18. Safeschools Trainings • Risk Pool provides on-line training for staff, sometimes for new hires only, sometimes once every three years, and sometimes every year. • This year returning staff have only one training in Safeschools: The Employee Information Booklet update. • New Staff, have many more.

  19. If you’re running from the monster, expect to trip or fall down at least twice, more if you are of a female. Even though you may be faster than the monster, you can be sure that it WILL catch you.

  20. What Every Employee Must Be Told • We take this training every other year, and this is an “off-year” for returning staff. • All new employees complete the training in SafeSchools and the system will log your results. • You will be reminded each week until you complete it.

  21. If your car runs out of gas at night, do not go to the nearby deserted-looking house to phone for help.

  22. New: MSDS – Chemical Labeling • Purpose: WAC 296-901-140 requires employers to train employees regarding the new GHS label elements and safety data sheets (SDS) formerly MSDS. • All chemical manufacturers/distributors must switch their labels by June 2015. Districts should have the majority of their MSDSs switched to the SDS format. On June 1, 2016 Districts must be fully compliant with the labeling format. • See handout for example located _________.

  23. If your friends suddenly begin to exhibit uncharacteristic behavior such as hissing, fascination for blood, glowing eyes, increasing hairiness, and so on, get away from them as fast as possible.

  24. New: Slips, Trips and Falls Prevention • Purpose: Protect staff from risk of slips, trips and falls. • See handout for more detailed information, located _________.

  25. Don’t fool with recombinant DNA technology unless you’re sure you know what you are doing. Even then, don’t do it.

  26. New: Vandalism, Theftand Arson Prevention • Purpose: Protect buildings, assets, and safety of staff and students. • See handout for more detailed information, located _________.

  27. If you’re searching for something that caused a noise and find out that it’s just the cat, leave the room immediately if you value your life.

  28. Emergency Contact Update • You must update your Emergency Contact Info form as needed and give to your supervisor. The forms are _________. • Health info is extremely confidential.
