  1. Injured Vocal Cords And Its Treatment What are vocal cords? We, as Humans, talk using the voice box. Inside the voice box, there are two vocal cords. When closed, the vocal folds vibrate and use the expelled airflow as a source of energy to produce sound. People whose professions are based primarily on their voices or who shout frequently are at major risk of vocal injuries. Also, people who work in noisy environments and require shouting to communicate are also at risk. Some of the common vocal cord disorders: Vocal cord nodules: These are callus-like growths in your voice box, which are caused by vocal abuse. Often, they occur in pairs, with a single nodule on each vocal cord. These nodules can cause great irritation. Vocal cord polyps: Often, there are some small, soft growths that appear on the vocal cords. The definition of this occurrence is known as vocal cord polyps. They are often caused by vocal abuse or by use of long-term irritants such as cigarette smoke or other chemical and or environmental hazards. Laryngitis: Sometimes, people may experience swelling on their vocal cords, which is caused by inflammation or infection. This vocal cord injury changes your voice as your swollen vocal cords vibrate differently than usual. typically Vocal cord paresis and vocal cord paralysis: When one or both your vocal cords do not open or close properly, this is called vocal cord paresis. On the other hand, when one or both of the vocal cords do not move, it becomes known as vocal cord paralysis. Vocal cord tumors: The tumors in your voice box can be cancerous or non- cancerous. Non-cancerous are just the unusual growth of tissues that can cause

  2. a problem in speaking. Cancerous growths are life threatening and most occur with people who smoke and or drink alcohol regularly. Treatment for vocal cord disorders There are three different treatment options for these types of disorders: 1) Nothing: Sometimes, doing nothing and letting your voice rest could heal your injured vocal cords on its own. However, it is up to the patient to decide how long to go with the above option before pursuing medical intervention. Usually, it takes a couple of weeks. 2) Surgical: This is usually the typical form of intervention. But immediate improvement is not always the outcome. There can be major risks in the outcome of vocal cord surgery. These risks can have irreversible consequences to your natural voice, especially in the vocal quality and strength, swallowing and breath control. 3) Voice therapy: This mode of intervention is one of the best approaches, performed under the guidance of a voice therapist/voice specialist. This therapy includes some voice instruction sessions, combined with natural herbs and remedies to compensate for voice disorders such as (for example) vocal cord paralysis. The specialist will also assist you in improving swallowing process, if needed. This may take several sessions before you start to see results; but, in he long run, the results will be highly noticeable and the process will also play a positive roll not only in your voice, but also in your overall health.
