  1. II. Climate Regions • TWO major factors classify climates: • Temperature &Precipitation. • 6 Regions • A. Tropical Rainy • B. Dry • C. Temperate Marine • D. Continental • E. Polar • F. Highlands

  2. A. Tropical Rainy • 1. Tropical Wet – prev. winds bring moisture • Rainforests – ½ of all species live here • Windward side of H. Island get a lot of rain. • Vines, orchids, ferns, trees • 2. Tropical Wet &Dry – less water. No rainforests, savannahs – grasslands, S. Florida

  3. Examples? • Tropical Wet • Tropical Wet and Dry

  4. B. Dry – inland . .away from water • Arid – desert, hot and sandy, cool and rocky • Less than 10 inches rain/yr. Cactus, yucca, California &Southwest. • Semi-Arid – short grasses and bushes, Steppe. • Great Plains

  5. C. Temperate Marine • Marine West coast – moderating effect from water – mild winters. Coolest 40 degrees N. rainy winters - humid air meets mountains. Thick forests, bears, coniferous trees, OR • Mediterrean –drier and warmer, 2 seasons, grasses, Chapperal, fruits, rice, nuts. FR, IT • Humid Subtropical – wet, warm, hot humid summers and cool winters, Oak, Ash, NO

  6. Temperate Marine

  7. D. Continental • Humid Continental – not influenced by oceans • Extremes in temp. Contin. Air masses move south – cold temps. Tropical air masses in summer bring hot temps . Midwest • Subarctic – north of Humid C. Short summers, Spruce, Fir, forests . Alaska – Eastern Canada • Bears, Moose

  8. Humid continental

  9. E. Polar (dry air) • Ice Caps – Greenland and Antarctica, at or below freezing all the time, low plants, lichens • Tundra – N. Alaska, Canada, Russia , short cool summers, frozen soil – permafrost. Water can’t drain so no trees can grow, soggy and wet, mosquitoes, wildflowers, shrubs, caribou, wolves, birds, et.

  10. Tundra

  11. F. Highlands • Temps decrease as alt. increases. Precip increases as air masses go over highland areas, windward side gets rain and snow, leeward is dry. Low part of mountain has climate of surrounding area, but going up is like going toward poles. Coniferous trees, treeline – no trees after that.
