  1. Aim: Aim:How successful was the manorial system in achieving self-sufficiency? Do Now: How would you react to a law that only allowed. Travel in your immediate neighborhood? Answer in two sentences. Homework: Explain if the manorial system was a satisfactory solution to the problems caused by the decline of the Roman Empire?

  2. Manorialism (Economic System in the Middle Ages) • The manor is the Lord’s estate, which was given to him by the king. • The Lord has obligations that he must fulfill. • He must make sure that the knights protect the land. • He must make sure that the serfs take care of the land, tend to the animals, and perform other duties to maintain the estate. • Usually 15-30 families lived on the manor/estate. • Everyone was important as they were self-sufficient.

  3. Document #1 The lord’s land was called the manor. Manors became the centers of economic life. The lord gave peasants/serfs some land and protection from invaders (barbarians). The lord controlled much of their lives. The peasants/serfs worked the land to grow food, giving part of each year’s crop to the lord. They paid taxes on their grain. Peasants/serfs also paid a tax, called a tithe to the Church. Life on the manor was often harsh. Peasant’s cottages had just one or two rooms with only straw mats for sleeping. They had poor diets. Peasants endured (to deal with) these conditions. They believed that God set their place in society. 1. What were the lords land called? 2. How did the lord treat peasants/serfs? 3. Peasants/serfs had to pay taxes. Who did they pay taxes to and what was it called? 4. The peasants/serfs had a horrible life. How did they feel about it?

  4. Document #2

  5. Analyzing a Picture • We just discussed the picture in the previous slide. • Answer the following questions: 1. You are a serf, what is secure (safe) about your world? 2. As a serf, how is your life limited (not a lot of freedom)?

  6. Life of a Serf • All serfs owed the Lord certain duties. • They rarely left the land. Everything they needed was on the land. • They could work for themselves a few days a week. The problem with this is whatever money they made they had to pay taxes. • If they wanted to marry, they needed permission from the Lord. In addition, they had to pay the Church a tithe (tax), which was 1/10 of their income. • They lived in crowded cottages with one or two rooms. They warmed their dirt-floor houses by bringing pigs inside. They slept on piled straw that was often covered with insects (bugs). • Serfs accepted their hard lives as it was part of the Church’s teachings. They, like most Christians during the Middle Ages, believed that God determined a person’s place in society.
