  1. THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

  2. 1. Write the main functions of the digestive system on the back of the digestive system sheet. (pg 7)

  3. 3 Functions of the Digestive System Digestion = B.A.R 1. reak down food 2. bsorb nutrients 3. id the body of solid wastes B A R

  4. Types of Digestion • Mechanical Digestion: break down food by chewing, turning, mixing • Chemical Digestion: Break down food using chemicals

  5. 2. Main Organ Foldable • A) Use a different color for the main organs • Esophagus • Stomach • Small Intestine • Large Intestine • Rectum and Anus

  6. 2. Main Organ Foldable b) Fold 6 sheets of paper (plastic cup) in half. Label the outside with the organ names c) Write a description for each organ. Include the role that the organ plays in the process of digestion

  7. 2. Main Organ Foldable d) Glue the sheets of paper next to the organ on the diagram

  8. Main Organs • Mouth: Begins to break down food through mechanical digestion. Saliva in mouth starts chemical digestion

  9. Main Organs • Esophagus: Tube that carries food to the stomach. NO Digestion takes place.

  10. Main Organs • Stomach: mechanical and chemical digestion . Secretes gastric juices to break down food

  11. Main Organs • Small Intestine: place where most chemical digestion occurs, absorbs nutrients found in food and sends to the blood stream

  12. Main Organs • Large Intestine: Absorbs water found in food and transfer water to the blood stream

  13. Main Organs • Rectum and Anus: short tube that stores solid wastes until it is eliminated through the anus

  14. Click on the image below. Take the quiz to practice your knowledge of the digestive system organs.

  15. 3. Accessory Organ Foldable • Color the accessory organs of the digestive system. Use a separate color for each organ. • Liver • Gallbladder • Pancreas

  16. 3. Accessory Organ b) Fold 3 sheets of paper in half. Write the name of the accessory organs on the outside c) Write a description of each organ. Include the role the organ plays in the digestive system.

  17. 3. Accessory Organ d) Glue the sheets of paper next to the organ on the diagram

  18. Other Organs (No Digestion) • Liver: produces bile to break down fat found in food • Gallbladder: stores bile that the liver produces

  19. Other Organs (No Digestion) • Pancreas: produces insulin and pepsin that breaks down food in the small intestine

  20. 4. Complete a foldable on Diabetes Diabetes • Non-Infectious (not caused by a pathogen) • Results in higher than normal blood sugar • Caused by a person’s inability to produce insulin in the pancreas • Can lead to other problems like heart and kidney disease

  21. 5. Working with other Systems Foldable Working with other Systems Muscular Circulatory Nervous

  22. Working with the Muscular System Muscles help break down food into smaller pieces. Muscles also help store/release solid wastes.

  23. Working with the Circulatory System Small Intestine absorbs nutrients from the food into the blood stream (circulatory System)

  24. Working with the Nervous System Nervous system controls smooth muscles needed for digestion and Releasing of solid wastes. Nervous system tells you when you need to eat.

  25. 6. Complete graphic organizer on the digestive system

  26. Click on the link below to reinforce your knowledge of the organs. There is a quiz at the end.
