History • Team handball originated in Europe in the 1920s • The Danish drew up the rules of handball in 1898 • The International Handball Federation consist of 136 members and 12 million registered players. • Men handball competed in the Munich Olympics in 1972. • Womens handball competed in the Montreal Olympics in 1976.

  3. Rules • 7 players on each side • Two referees • A throw-off is taken by the team that wins the coin toss and chooses to start the game with the ball

  4. Rules Cont….. • A player is allowed to run with the ball for 3 steps -To hold the ball for 3 seconds -Unlimited dribble with 3 steps allowed before and after dribbling • A player is allowed to use the torso of the body to obstruct an opponent with or without the ball. • A goal is scored when the entire ball crosses the goal line inside the goal.

  5. Rules Cont… • Players can use any part of their body except their lower legs and feet to stop, hit, catch, or throw • Two 30 minute halves with 10 minute break

  6. Fouls and Penalties • Free throw is awarded for playing the ball illegally • Free throws are the right to play the ball without interference. • Players may not steal or strike the ball from another player • The goal keeper is the only player allowed to defend against the throw

  7. Equipment • Leather ball • The goal (9 ft 9ins wide and 6ft 6ins tall)

  8. Skills needed • Catching • Throwing • Hand eye coordination • Dribbling

  9. Additional Info • The largest team handball club is in Atlanta, GA • It is a combination of basketball, soccer, hockey and lacrosse all in one
