What is an Institute for Learning in Retirement? • A formal organization of older adults • A non-residential study program affiliated with a college or university • Furthering education & intellectual needs/desires • Members are responsible for learning opportunities • Affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network “If wisdom comes with age, we should work at embracing the experience.”

Institute for Learning in Retirement - History • 1962 - New School for Social Research in New York City • 1988 - Elderhostel Institute Network formed • 1999 - 264 affiliated ILRs with 48 in development involving over 66,000 people • 2000 - Over 300 ILRs in the United States “If wisdom comes with age, we should work at embracing the experience.”

Characteristics of ILRs • Independent entities • Created by a unique group of people • Sponsored by a host institution • Has its own special character and mission • Learners develop their own college level educational programs • An educational community of older learners “If wisdom comes with age, we should work at embracing the experience.”

Common Goals and Characteristics • Educational Purpose - College level, continuing education • Member organization - Learners join ILRs • Open membership - No educational pre-requisite • Dues - Members pay dues • Member lead decision-making • Determine curriculum • Recruit members • Finance the ILR • Develop social programs “If wisdom comes with age, we should work at embracing the experience.”
