  3. Opening China • 1972 - Nixon visited communist China and met with Chairman Mao • This visit began a relationship between America and China • “Ping Pong” diplomacy • Strengthened cultural ties

  4. Détente • Gradual relaxation of hostilities • Nixon and Soviet leader Brezhev agreed to begin diplomacy • Diplomacy: developing relationships between nations by talking • Peaceful meetings take place • The “red telephone” is installed

  5. SALT I • 1972 - Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty • Part of the détente diplomacy • Both America and U.S.S.R. agreed to stop making new weapons

  6. War Powers Act • Passed in 1973 • Required a President to get permission from Congress before sending U.S. troops to war • If there is a national emergency, the president can establish a 60-day “police action” • Done in response to Vietnam War

  7. Apollo 11 • 1969 - NASA landed American astronauts on the moon • America “won” the space race • Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on the surface of the moon

  8. Watergate • June 17, 1972 • To help Nixon win a presidential election, men broke into his opponent's office • stole files and planted bugs • News got out – not good for Nixon

  9. Nixon vs. United States • Nixon lied about knowing about the Watergate break-in • The Supreme Court ordered Nixon to give up any evidence • Nixon resigned before he could be impeached • Impeachment: The process by which a president is removed from office
