1968. Mr. Wyatt. Tet Offensive. The year is 1968 and it starts with the TET Offensive (30 January) where the Vietcong attacked all the major cities of South Vietnam. These attacks failed in the military sense but did change the minds of the American people back home.

  2. Tet Offensive The year is 1968 and it starts with the TET Offensive (30 January) where the Vietcong attacked all the major cities of South Vietnam. These attacks failed in the military sense but did change the minds of the American people back home. • A week long truce to celebrate the Vietnamese New Year. • Villagers went to the cities to celebrate….so did Charlie. • An unusually high amount of funerals were being held as well, but these coffins held weapons. • They attacked 100 villages, 6 air bases the U.S. Embassy in Saigon. • Took a month to end. • Charlie lost over 32,000 troops • Tet won the hearts and minds of the U.S. people. • Tet won over Walter Cronkite, who was a WW II correspondent and supported the war. (It was said by LBJ that “If I lost Walter Cronkite, then its over. I’ve lost Mr. Average Citizen”).

Johnson gains opposition Eugene McCarthy decides to run against LBJ on a peace platform, to be followed by Robert Kennedy….until 31 March 1968 where LBJ announced that he wasn’t going to run for the nomination for president. King and Kennedy assassinated by June of 1968. Protests grew to in size and danger that at Columbia University, students took over several buildings and it required police to restore order and arrested 900 people.

Democratic National Convention In Chicago where the Democratic National Convention was being held, Hubert Humphrey (LBJ’s V.P.) was given the nomination to run against Richard Nixon of the Republicans. Meanwhile, Yippies were trying to cause trouble for the Democratic Party and its Chicago mayor, Richard Daley. • He mobilized 12,000 cops • 28 August a riot broke out both outside the park and inside the convention center • All on TV

Opposition Parties George Wallace entered the race for president as a 3rd party candidate, running for the American Independent Party. • He pulled the South and many Northern white working class voters tired of the inner city riots. Nixon Wins the White House. • Republican – promises to restore law and order
