  1. Wikis

  2. Some resources What is a wiki: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dnL00TdmLY How do you make a PBWorks account: http://www.uvm.edu/~hag/screencasts/pbworks-account.mp4 Assignment for Thursday

  3. What is a Wiki? A multi-authored, collaborative web site. As with any web site, it has a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) a.k.a. web address.

  4. What is PBWorks? A tool for creating wikis. A web space for publishing wikis.

  5. What is a wiki made of? Handcrafted web pages that MAY be linked together. No magic. You create each page using text, pictures, and links. The design and formatting are also manually crafted and may require using a bit of HTML code.

  6. Some PBWorks Terms Workspaces/wikis Pages and Files Edit vs. View Page History FrontPage

  7. Terms: Workspaces • Spaces on the PBWorks server that hold content (i.e., the files you upload, the pages you create).  • One account can have several spaces, each with its own user list. • Each workspace has a web address: http://workspace-name.pbworks.com Example: http://envsepd.pbworks.com

  8. Terms: Pages and Files Files: any computer files you upload to your workspace:image files, text files, video or audio files, spreadsheet files, etc. Pages: what you create by:typing or pasting in text, inserting images, or creating links to other pages in your wiki, or files, or external web pages.

  9. Terms: View vs. Edit Edit: how the author sees it – the one with the editing icons. View: how an outsider sees it – the “read only” version.

  10. Terms: Page History Every change, by every writer, on every page. Click on the link to see what was changed and who made the change.

  11. Terms: FrontPage The top or opening page of the wiki where you will build your Table of Contents. Yes, you can change the name.

  12. Editing Wiki Pages Basic tools Table Link Source

  13. Editing: Basic Tools Bold, italics, underline Bullet or numbered list Indent paragraph Left, center, right align text Undo Font styles

  14. Editing: Tables Not just for blocks of text. Tables are the easiest (and in wikis often the only) way to align elements on a page. For example, to place a caption directly under a picture:
