  2. Supervised ministry… helps you develop ministry skills, practice theological reflection, discern your call, experience professional collegiality and support, and undergo personal transformation. It brings together your head, hands, and heart to nurture an integrated ministerial identity.

  3. Characteristics • Supervision/Mentoring/Apprenticeship • Theological Reflection (reflective practitioner) • Practicum (peer support/accountability group) • 400 hours – includes practicum, prep time, and travel time over 15-minute commute Options: Part-time Internship (PTI), Summer Intensive, Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), other established programs

  4. Credits • Elective; do not apply toward Area IV • Summer = 6; Part-time = 6 (must take Fall & Spring); Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) = 6 • A course: requires registration; CPE requires transfer of credits • Grade: Credit/No credit • 2nd internship is possible; all include stipend; maximum is 15 credits toward degree

  5. Finances • $3500, applied to your Bursar account (SIS) • If site pays, amount offsets YDS $3500 grant. • PTI - $1750 each semester • CPE - $3500 in weekly installments, distributed as work-study funds (so taxes are withheld)

  6. Prerequisites • Negotiating Boundaries in Ministerial Relationships (REL 3990) • Aug 26-27 or Feb 8 or Apr 5 *(BTFO site says Apr 6) • Requires course registration • Meet with Lucinda between Oct 1 and Dec 1 • Attend student orientation Jan 29

  7. Other Important Dates • CPE information Sep 26; CPE Day Oct 2 • Deadline for new site request March 7 • March 15 & 28 - deadline for summer and fall applications, respectively; interviews in April

  8. Tips on Choosing a Site • Know what your denomination/bishop/committee requires or prefers • Is CPE required? • Can you do a parish internship in a different denomination? • Do you need to do a parish internship, or can you look at other options? • Will a summer internship be adequate? • Timing • Consider scheduling, finances, learning style • Get a car • Don’t become part of the community where you hope to intern. • Visit places. Talk to other students. Good Luck!

  9. Right now… • Several options for when and how • 6 non-Area credits • $3500 • Take Negotiating Boundaries first • Meet with Director this fall • Start gathering information • CPE information, Sep 26 CPE Day, Oct 2 divinity.yale.edu/supervised-ministries/btfo-presentationOSM>Resources>BTFO
