  2. Overview of the Computer • The computer as we know it is a group of pieces of hardware put together to  get a job done faster. • The "computer" is an ensemble (a collection) of different machines that you will be using to get your job done.

  3. …….. • A computer is primarily made of the Central Processing Unit (usually referred to as the computer), the monitor, the keyboard, and the mouse. • Other pieces of hardware, commonly referred to as peripherals, can enhance or improve your experience with the computer.

  4. Practical Learning: Starting a Computer • To turn the computer on, find its power button and press it. After a while you will see your desktop after being asked for login username and password or not depending on your environment.

  7. Monitors • Monitors come in different sizes. The (most important) size of the monitor is measured diagonally on the screen and is given in inches: • Based on this, monitors range in sizes of 12", 14", 15", 17", 19", 21", 24', or 29", etc.

  12. Types of computers • The desktop:- when it is relatively small enough to be positioned on top of a table where a person is working. Made up of many parts connected using cables

  13. Types of computers • The laptop:- when it combines the CPU, the monitor, the keyboard, and the mouse in one unit to be so small that you can carry it on your laps when traveling.

  14. Types of computers • The server:- is a computer that holds information that other computers, called workstations, can retrieve. Such workstations are connected to the server using various means. • Sometimes desktops or laptops can be used as a server

To dismiss it, press Esc • If you have any window open, close itPress F1, notice that the Help window for the computer comes up • To close the Help file, press Alt + F4 • To start WordPad, on the Taskbar, click Start. Position the mouse on Programs or All Programs. Position the mouse on Accessories. Click WordPad • While WordPad is displaying, press F1. Notice that, this time, it is the Help window for WordPad that came up • To close the Help file, press Alt + F4 • To close WordPad, press Alt + F4

Fundamentals of Applications • Operating systems • The first and most important program of your computer is called an operating system. • All the other programs depend on it. • Everything that works in your computer is in accordance with the operating system. • Since our lessons focus on the popular "personal computer", the operating system we use is called Microsoft Windows.
