Our plans Cavities (in process) • H Carter (breakout) • Cavities - Parallel path approach-starting this year • JLab adapt and commission their electropolish system(EP) for TESLA cavities • JLab to commission EP system with two cavities supplied from DESY • Cornell & AES to team on producing, BCP processing, and vertical dewar testing (VDT) 6 cavities • JLab to tool up to build model, prototype, and 4 Tesla cavities • KEK plans to provide 4 low loss (LL) cavities - higher gradient design to be processed and VDT at Cornell or JLab • Consideration being given to buying 4 Tesla cavities from Accel • Total cavities -18 Probably take at least 6 months to start seeing some cavities tested and at least 12-18 months to see sizable number tested • Nb Material order for 12 H Edwards - Proton Driver Director's Review

Our Plans- SMTF Modules (1) • Step Zero- CryoCap#2 test in Meson by Oct-Challenging • Single cavity test with 4K helium and RF • Cavity prepared at DESY • DESY/FNAL module • DESY offered to provide a module TTF3+ in the mid 06, early 07 time scale • This depends to some extent on FNALs preparedness to deal with module assembly and readiness for test • Most likely implementation- • DESY to send tested cavities ready for string assembly. • String assembled in cleanroom at FNAL • Module then assembled from parts provided by DESY • US International ILC Module • Module assembled from cavities discussed above and components (eg cold mass) with possible contributions from collaborators. • Schedule - Plan to assemble these 2 modules starting late 06 continuing in 07 and cryo-RF test at least one in 07 H Edwards - Proton Driver Director's Review

Our Plans Modules (2) • Design modification considerations for ILC • Cavity length- beam tubes same both ends ~ -3cm • Tuner type- blade or Saclay type II, with integrated piezo tuner • Quad- BPM package and power leads- needs to be packaged for clean room assembly- consider HTC leads- TESLA assembly must fit in module length • Quad location for maximum stability of BPM and minimum Quad vibration- below center post • Review end pipe cryo connections- efficient use of space. • For the future • HOM absorber (is it needed for PD?) • Tuner stepping motor reliability • Industrial design (DESY doing industrial tech transfer) • Differences LC and PD (PD closer to XFEL) • PD Gradient lower- dark current and Lorentz force less • Power coupler pulse length and power- PD longer, needs test • Adjustable coupling beta for different PD beam currents • Cavity spacing- LC mimimize, PD Lambda/2 • HOM coupler heating? CONCLUSIONS • The TESLA Beta 1 module design is well advanced and will continue to be refined and industrialized for XFEL • Cavity performance is almost there for PD requirements, but must be proven to be consistent • The SMTF effort should bring this technology to Fermilab/ US industry and prove operational requirements • Differences between PD, LC and XFEL modules will happen, but should be small, assuring a well understood basis • The cost will be better understood with US prototypes. Designs for cost reduction and industrialization will be undertaken • We and XFEL/TESLA have plans that will continue to reduce technical and cost risk H Edwards - Proton Driver Director's Review
