Ordered Magnetic Nanocomposites from Multifunctional Core-Shell Nanoparticles Hong Yang, University of Rochester, DMR 0449849 This past year, we have succeeded in understanding some of the factors that govern the shape and composition of metal and metal alloy nanoparticles. Two research topics are highlighted here: The first is on the crystal phase control in an alloy nanocrystal. An important question needs to be addressed in using alloy nanoparticles in magnetic nanocomposites or high performance nanocatalysts is the control of crystal phases. In one of our recent communications appeared in J. Amer. Chem. Soc. (Synthesis and characterization of ordered intermetallic PtPb nanorods, 2007, 129, 8694). we have proposed a mechanism by which the ordered intermetallic/alloy nanorods with specific crystal phase can form. Another research is focused on the understanding on how twin crystal defects in a low-indexed plane can lead to the formation of a range of complex shapes of platinum nanostructures. This discovery can have broad ramifications on the shape control of face centered cubic (FCC) metal nanocrystals. This work is featured in the front cover of the October 4th issue of J. Phys. Chem. C.

For the fifth years in a row, Prof. Yang has accepted undergraduate interns and high school students, including those from the under-representative groups (an ACS SEED Project Summer II student, Mr. Dalton Labarge), into his program to conduct research in the area of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
