  1. Nordic e-Science/e-Infrastructures SverkerHolmgren Director of the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (leaving …) (… becoming) Program Director for the Nordic GlobalisationInitiative in e-Science Professor in ScientificComputing, Uppsala University SNIC 2011

  2. Summary Way back • National activities • Research • Education • Infrastructure eNORIA Joint activities Joint/coordinated participartion in EU-initiatives Nordic GlobalisationInitiative in e-Science Now Great future! SNIC 2011

  3. e-Science “e-Science is about developing and applying advanced tools within information and communication technology (ICT) in order to exploit a new mode of advancing research, complementing theory and experiments. e-Science is also about global collaboration within key areas of science, and about the next generation of infrastructures that will enable it.” SNIC 2011

  4. e-Infrastructure • data networks • high performance computing • distributed (grid/cloud) computing • access to and handling of data • network-enabled research instrumentation • … CLARIN EISCAT ESS BBMRI SNIC 2011

  5. e-RI example 1: Data Networks NORDUnet- Joint enterprise owned byDK, FI, IS, NO, SE. Governed by the National Research and Eduactional Network (NREN) organisations. GÉANT - Dedicated high-bandwidth pan-European network. Provides advanced interconnectivity between Europe's NRENs NORDUnet connects the Nordic NRENs to GÉANT. Represents the Nordic NRENs. SNIC 2011

  6. e-RI example 2: Distributed Computing (grid) NDGF- Project funded byDK, FI, IS, NO, SE. Governed by the National Grid Initiatives (NGI) organisationsand funding agencies. Initiated 2002. EGI – European Grid Infrastructure. Provides a single European grid infrastructure by federating the national grids. NDGF coordinates the participation of the Nordic NGIs in EGI. SNIC 2011

  7. e-RI example 3: Access to data EUDAT – European Data Infrastructure. “Preparatory phase project” funded by EC. Led by FI. Participation from NO, FI, SE. A lot to do! SNIC 2011

  8. e-RI example 4: HPC NHPC- pilot project funded byDK, IS, NO, SE. Governed by the National High Performance Computing organisations. Initiated 2010. PRACE – ESFRI project. Provides access to (a small number of) massive-scale European HPC resources. FI, NO, SE participates in PRACE. NHPC is a potential basis for futurecollaborativeefforts on HPC. SNIC 2011

  9. eNORIA Action Plan – Training Researchers in e-Science Tools and Methods – A Nordic e-Science Masters Education – Sharing and Specialising Nordic e-Science Educational Modules – Fostering Nordic e-Science Collaboration through Mobility – A Nordic e-Science Programme for Research into Grand Challenges – Strengthening National e-Science Initiatives – Open Access to National Data Repositories – Facilitating Sustainable Grid Infrastructure Collaboration – Implementing Cross-Border Sharing of Resources – Environmentally-Friendly Nordic High Performance Computing NordForskNoria-NET. Commissioned by NCM. SNIC 2011

  10. Globalisation Initiative in e-Science • e-Science research (climate, health, …, • methodology) • e-Scienceeducation • e-Infrastructure • Starts 2011. Currentlyfunded by NCM, NordForsk, • FI, NO, SE. 110 + 70 MNOK. • Builds on • existingactivities (research, education, infrastructure) • eNORIA action plan SNIC 2011

  11. Key elements for Nordic collaboration (personal view...) • Bottom-up approach! • Build on strong national activities • Utilizeexistingcollaborativeframworks • Provide framework for coordinatedparticipation in • EU-/global-levelinitiatives! • Involve national activities/researchers in strategy work! • Use the right tools for collaboration! • Use the collaboratino at the right level! • Not always all countries! SNIC 2011

  12. Summary Way back • National activities • Research • Education • Infrastructure eNORIA Action Plan Joint activities Joint/coordinated participartion in EU-initiatives Nordic GlobalisationInitiative in e-Science Now Great future! SNIC 2011
