Ice and the Northern Sea Route – relentless progress? • 2010 – less ice = 4 transits • 2011 - less ice = 26 transits • 2012 – less ice = 46 transits • 2013 – 30% more ice = 71 transits BUT 2012 – 1.25m tonnes c.f. Suez 740 m tonnes !!! Suez capacity 76 vessels per 24 hours!!! BUT Chinese forecast May 2014 Nordic Meeting – • NSR to equal total current world container traffic by 2030 !!! • Total world traffic to triple by 2030 !!!
