Henry VIII’s wives have their say!

OBJ: to understand what is included in emphatic writing, and how to create it

What is empathy

What is empathy?

  • Empathy is the capacity to recognise emotions that are being experienced by another.

  • To write in this style, you must show that you understand what the person has been through, how they might feel, and attempt to create a voice for them.

1 sound knowledge of what has happened

1. Sound knowledge of what has happened

  • You must show you have understood what has happened to the person.

“I have been sentenced to death for treason”

This will show that you understand what factually happened, but this is just the beginning….

2 thoughts feelings and attitudes

2. Thoughts, feelings and attitudes

2. You must show that you understand how the person would be feeling, how they would react to their situation and to others around them.

“I can’t believe this is happening. I have been sentenced to death. After everything we’ve been through?”

This will show that you are beginning to empathise with the person and their situation……

3 adopting a character s voice

3. Adopting a character’s voice

3. You must show that you have attempted to show you understand them as a person; you’ve tried to show their personality.

“I can’t believe this is happening. Damn him! Sentence me – to death?!”

This will show that you know a little about their personality and have tried to capture their character traits.

Getting to know our queen

Getting to know our Queen

  • Make a list of the key moments in her life

  • How would she react to each moment?

  • What do we know about her as a person? What are her character traits? How can we make these reactions more authentic to her?

  • EXTRA: Will we write in a formal way? Can we use words key to the era?
