JCOP ALICE • JCOP + • Discussion forum, exchange of ideas, architecture issues • Common interface to CERN services: Gas, electricity, etc. • JCOP ALICE • Used so far: PVSS, FW: CAEN HV, ISEG HV (temp), FSM tools, SMI • Plan to use: all (or most) deliverables as listed in JCOP Program Plan • ALICE JCOP • ISEG FW integration • PVSS application for rack control • ALICE expects • The timely delivery of JCOP deliverables • Long term support of JCOP deliverables (by support groups)

Usefulness of JCOP • How well does JCOP cover ALICE needs? • all (almost) will be used by ALICE • Limited success: • GIF: useful as a service but limited feedback for controls • Rack Control: limited outcome until recently • Fields not covered: • Connection to FEE • FEE configuration • Connection to TRG/DAQ • Common purchasing • Radiation issues

Technology choices • Is PVSS a good choice? • Limited experience in ALICE so far • Improvements and adaptations needed • Seams adequate for ALICE needs • Long term existence/support/evolution is uncertain • However… • Having made a choice which might be on the limit is better than no choice at all !

Conclusion • ALICE DCS requirements defined to ~ 70% today • Prototyping of sub-system solutions started • ~75% are common solutions - JCOP • ~25% are dedicated solutions - ALICE • Not many JCOP deliverables materialized so far, however… • ALICE relies fully on the timely delivery of projected JCOP tools and components • ALICE collaboration with JCOP globally very positive
