Government of the 13 colonies • The 13 colonies were located in America but controlled/ruled by England • England made decisions regarding what it thought was best for the 13 colonies • Issue (Dispute over authority) • French and Indian war • France wanted the 13 colonies • Indians wanted freedom • They teamed up to fight England • England made the 13 colonies: • Pay for the war (Taxes) • Feed/house soldiers

More issues Taxes, taxes, and more taxes Boston Massacre 13 colonist and British soldiers are facing off Tensions between the two sides exploded Someone shoots = everyone starts shooting 5 colonist were killed British tried to make everything ok by repealing (doing away with) the Townshend Acts =American Revolutionary War • Quartering Act- soldiers in homes • Sugar Act- Tax on sugar • Stamp Act –Tax on paper • Townshend Act –Taxes and punishment • Coercive Act –punish those who challenged British authority = Intolerable acts

Enlightenment ideas Locke and Rousseau Montesquieu Separation of power Separate a governments power up to keep it from being corrupt 3 branches • Locke • Natural Rights –Life, liberty, and own property • Everyone has rights • Government gets its power from the people • If a government doesn’t protect the peoples rights it can be overthrown • Rousseau • All of Locke's ideas and…. That people give up some rights so that they can be protected

  6. Idea to revolt (ideology) Why did the colonist think they could revolt??????? Declaration of Independence We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, • New ideas about government and rights • John Locke • Natural Rights: Life, Liberty and property • Everyone has rights • Government gets/derives its power from the people/ governed • IF a government is violating the people rights, the people should overthrow that government
