  1. Office of Science OFFICE OFSCIENCE Biological and Environmental Research (BER) AMS Public-Private Partnership Forum April 21, 2009 Anna Palmisano, Associate Director of Science Biological and Environmental Research Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy

  2. Climate & Environmental Sciences • Climate Research • Atmospheric System Research • Climate & Earth System Modeling • Environmental Systems Science AmeriFlux Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) Modeling climate change impacts - Future changes in frost days predicted from climate model Terrestrial Ecosystem Impacts

  3. Climate change simulations Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Climate Research Facility Continuous field measurements and data products that improve cloud science in climate models

  4. Objective: Improve scientific understanding the fundamental physics of clouds and the interactions between clouds and radiative feedback processes in the atmosphere to improve climate model predictions. ARM Science Program • Approach: • Instrument retrievals • Data Analysis • Development and evaluation of model parameterization Impact: Improved climate model predictions

  5. Atmospheric Science Program Approach: A coordinated mix of activities to investigate key atmospheric physical processes: Laboratory studies of basic processes Field campaigns for “real world” observations and to validate model predictions Model-based representations of processes (develop, implement, and validate) Measurement instrumentation / method development Objective: Improve scientific understanding of the atmospheric processes that drive aerosol radiative forcing of climate Impact:Improved instruments, process understanding, and models

  6. Office of Science Biological and Environmental Research: Complex systems science for DOE mission needs in energy, environment, discovery and innovation
