  2. Thirty Years’ War • Most important of 17th cent.! • Due to failure of Peace of Augsburg in HRE

  3. 4 Phases

  4. Break into 4 groups • Move from station to station • Read primary source • Fill in the chart with a summary of the source, key points, and any key people • As a class we’ll go over it

  5. Bohemian Phase • Defenestration of Prague - 2 HRE officials thrown out a window • HRE placed restrictions on Protestantism, so Prot. forces fought back • Defeated, drives Protestantism out

  6. Danish Phase - • Albrecht von Wallenstein - invades northern Germany, wins against Prots. • Edict of Restitution - Church territory that was secularized goes back to state

  7. Swedish Phase • Gustavus Adolphus - King of Sweden - moves Catholics back to Bohemia • HRE annuls Edict of Restitution • Swedish army defeated (1634) - France fears Catholic resurgence

  8. French Phase • Cardinal Richelieu - allied france with Protestant forces to defeat HRE • His policies reflect diplomatic concerns practically -- What type of leader is he?
