Discovery of the Cell • In 1665, Robert Hooke looked under a microscope at thin slice of cork and said he saw tiny little boxes. • Hooke decided to call these “little boxes” cells because it reminded him of the cells that monks lived in. • Hooke actually saw the remains of dead cells. • Hooke went on to look at more complex forms of organisms to also find cells in them.

  3. Discovery of the Cell • Anton van Leeuwenhoek • Was the first person to look at living cells. This took place in 1673 with a very crude and simple microscope.

  4. Cell Theory • 150 years after Hooke and van Leeuwenhoek, scientists began to organize the data they had gathered • They created the cell theory.

  5. Cell Theory • The cell theory has three parts • All living things are composed of 1 or more cells • Cells are the basic units of structure and function of an organism • Cells come only form existing cells.

  6. Cell Diversity • No one cell is alike • Cells differ in • Size • Shape • Internal organization

  7. Cells • A cell is the smallest unit that can carry out all the activities necessary for life. • As the cell grows it takes in more food and creates more wastes. It increases its volume however the surface area of the cell does not increase as fast as the volume. This is what regulates how fast a cell will grow.

  8. Two Types of Cells • All cells can be divided into two classes. • Prokaryotes: which is very small and simple cell that contains no nucleus • Eukaryotes: which are cells that have many organelles

  9. Prokaryotes • Contain no nucleus • No membrane organelles • Most are 1-10 microns in size • Evolved 3.5 billion years ago • Only bacteria

  10. Eukaryotes • Contain a nucleus • Many organelles • Many 2-1000 microns in size • Evolved 1.5 billion years ago • All other cells • Plant and Animal Cells
