  2. What have you learnt? Over the duration of the semester we have learnt that the implementation of policy is how the Australian government addresses societal issues. We have considered how is policy is made, influencing factors and some of the inherent tensions faced by policy makers when designing policy. How policy impacts the population they were designed for has also been considered. Our knowledge on such topics has no doubt been enhanced and we now feel more confident to participate in discussions and debates as we encounter them. This last assessment for 1006HSV will further deepen your knowledge on policy development and invite you to continue to think deeply about significant social problems or issues. 1006HSV 2016

Task requirement Write a 2000 word essay which explains: • How the relevant policies in the policy area have impacted upon this group over time • Why there have been significant policy shifts over time • What are current issues in the delivery of services in this area • Why have these issues emerged 1006HSV 2016

Some questions to assist….. *Use these questions as a guide, not all the questions will be relevant to every policy Criteria One: Clear explanation of how relevant policies have impacted on the group you have selected – 8 marks Questions to assist: • What are significant issues for this group? (e.g Indigenous Australians experiences poorer health outcomes) • Why was the need for the policy initiated? • How prevalent are the significant issues for this group? Prompt questions cont… Criteria Two: Well-developed analysis of reasons for changes or shifts in policy over time – 8 marks Questions to assist: • When was policy to respond to this issue first introduced? (use discretion re: time frames – no need to cover every policy introduced on this issue) • What influenced decisions to respond to the issue? • Have there been changes in approaches to the issue? • What informed these changes • What have been the ideological shifts (e.g neoliberalism) • Are the needs of the group sufficiently addressed by policy at different stages in time? Criteria Three: Comprehensive explanation of current issues in the delivery of services in the area – 8 marks Questions to assist: • What does the literature (journal articles, recent text books, relevant websites) say about current issues for this area of policy? • What are the challenges? • What positive impacts has the policy had regarding this topic? • Is there still unmet needs, if so, please explain (e.g rural areas, particular groups etc) Department name (Edit in View > Header and Footer)

Criteria Four: Well developed analysis of reasons for current issues – 8 marks Questions to assist: • Has there been a reduction in funds/resources? • Is training for those working in the area adequate? • Is retention/turnover of staff an issue? • Is the issue likely to grow faster than the services can respond? • Are there issues of fair pay for the workers? • Are the needs of the client group more complex than previously recognized by services? • Are there burnout issues for staff? Criteria Six: Structure: Well-constructed introduction, paragraphs, conclusion, referencing and grammar – 5 marks Questions to assist: • Do you have an introduction, body and conclusion to your paper? • Have you paraphrased in preference to using direct quotes? • Have you used at least 10 references? • Are your sentences clear and not too lengthy? • Have you defined relevant terms? • Have you checked the names of the service or government department is accurate?
