  13. UNIVERSITY ADMISSION • Proof of English proficiency • Number of years in Canada • English proficiency test • English 12 for Graduation • Minimum grade for English 12 • Minimum grade required for BC Institution OR Write the LPI or Institution based English Placement Test

  14. “TYPICAL” UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS • English 12 – must include the English 12 Prov. Exam worth 40% of final grade. • At least 3 (4 in Eastern schools) other Gr. 12 academic courses “approved” by the institution • May need to fulfill faculty specific courses at Gr 11 & 12 level

  15. Approved Grade 12 Courses For Post-Secondary Entry The following is a general list of the approved grade 12 subjects used by B.C. Post-Secondary Institutions: • English 12 (Students must write the English 12 Provincial Exam worth 40% of final grade) • English Literature 12 • Biology 12 • Calculus 12 • Chemistry 12 • Geography 12 • Geology 12 • Law 12 • Physics 12 • Pre-Calculus Math 12 • Foundations of Math 12 • Mandarin 12, French 12, Spanish 12, Punjabi 12, Japanese 12 • Social Justice 12 (SFU only and some Ontario universities) • AP courses

  16. University Requirements Universities usually have 2 sets of requirements– General & Program Specific. General: ◊English Language Requirement - completion of the last 3-4 years of full-time secondary school education in Canada and a minimum grade in English 12 OR an additional written test (ex. TOEFL) when 1st language is not English ◊Minimum of 4 approved Grade 12 courses, including English 12 ◊Graduation from high school with a minimum average in some courses, ex. 70% English 11, 60% Math 11 ◊A language 11 may be required (UBC & SFU) Not UVic…

  17. University Requirements Program specific: Completion of certain grade 11 & 12 courses depending on programs students are applying for and a required minimum average in these courses. For Example – Faculty of Science UBC • English 12 • Pre-calculus Math 12 (a min. average 67%) • Two other approved Grade 12 courses including one of Biology 12, Chemistry 12, Geology 12, Physics 12 • Pre-calculus Math 11 or Foundations of Math 12 • English 11 + Language 11 • Physics 11 + Chemistry 11 • Approved Social Studies 11 course

Kwantlen Polytechnical University (KPU) >practical and hands-on undergraduate level studies >vocational and career level programs General requirements: ~“C” Eng 12/Comm 12 (TOEFL 80) ~”C+” Foundations Math 11 or “C” Pre-Calculus 11 2015 New General requirements: ~”C+” Eng 12 or “A” Comm 12 ~math same Specific Program requirements typically require “B” Eng 12 (eg. Art/Business Degrees) **September, January and May entries**

  19. ADMISSION ENTRANCE AVERAGES • Each institution will set its own minimum acceptable grades • Each year, admission averages change • Check out the admission average on the institution’s website

  20. APPLICATION PROCESS • Apply to more than one school - You need a backup plan!! • Applications require a fee for processing which is non-refundable • How many programs within one school can I apply for? • If I am not accepted, will the schools automatically consider me for my second choice?

HOW DO I APPLY TO A UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE? • Instead of through the Institution’s website • Centralized Service: • EducationPlannerBC (BC) • OUAC (Ontario) • Applyalberta (Alberta) You can begin applying NOW – February (institution specific) and marks are sent later in November/early spring/spring (institution specific).

HOW DOES EDUCATIONPLANNER WORK? • Create an account on-line – search schools, make plans > personal career plan, search careers, career trek/videos • Common Form • Personal Information • Only needs to be filled in once • Institution Specific Application • Select preferred program • Start date • Complete Supplement Application if required • Pay institution application fee for each institution

American and UK Applications BALANCE = ACADEMIC + EXTRA CURRICULAR • Need to prepare and write SAT/ACT • Letters of recommendation; personal essay • Volunteering and community involvement • Consult the School Counsellor Different Deadlines: Early Action/Decision – October/November Regular Decision - January

BE ORGANIZED Create folders • For each institution • Write down the student number generated for the institution (different for every institution) Log onto your Student Portal • Create an account • Check frequently • Keep a copy of instructions/email sent from each institution in corresponding folders Submission of Grades • Check: on-line portal or “official transcript” Note: Official Transcripts can be ordered at the school office and it costs $5

HOW DO I SEND IN MY MARKS? • PSI CHOICES FORM • https://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/tsw/tsw/student Opens October 2016 • Sometimes schools require a transcript – available from the office at a cost of $5 • Self-reporting – What is self-reporting? -can start in Feb 2015 depending on university • Why do I have to self-report?

  28. PSI Selection Form • ATTENTION:ALL students applying to post-secondary institutions must complete the PSI Selections form online.. By completing this form, you are giving permission to the Ministry of Education to send a copy of your transcript to which you are applying. Your Counselling Department highly recommends that you complete this process by January 30th as issues sometimes arise. • Deadline for completion is APRIL 30th
